The Entry-Level Laboratory Animal Resources Associate will play a vital role in the Laboratory Animal Science Team, focusing on in vivo ophthalmology research. This position involves hands-on laboratory work, animal care, and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure the success of research projects. The role requires weekend rotations and emphasizes technical skills, teamwork, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

  • Conduct technical aspects of ophthalmic animal research projects focused on diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and neuro-induced ocular diseases.
  • Operate ocular imaging equipment, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Fluorescein Angiography (FA), Electroretinography (ERG), Fundus Photography, and Tomography.
  • Perform eye examinations using slit lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy across all species of laboratory animals.
  • Conduct specialized ocular research procedures, including ocular surgeries and injections (e.g., intravitreal, subretinal, and implants).
  • Apply artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) knowledge to develop algorithms for ocular image analysis, such as retinal segmentation.
  • Utilize analytical software for data analysis and interpretation and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and well-organized digital records of research protocols, procedures, study data, inventories, and reports.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team player with principal investigators, scientific staff, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, IACUC members, facility managers, and animal care technicians.
  • Work cross-functionally on ongoing in vivo discovery research and development projects.
  • Excel in interdisciplinary environments and maintain strong communication with colleagues from diverse fields.
  • Carry out research and medical treatment regimens for research animals under the guidance of the Veterinarian.
  • Assist in or conduct aseptic surgical procedures and perioperative care.
  • Perform diagnostic radiography and specific imaging techniques and conduct routine clinical pathology procedures.
  • Administer injectable and inhalation anesthetic agents under the guidance of a veterinarian.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and well-organized records of animal treatments, procedures, inventories, research protocols, and reports.
  • Independently recognize study/project hurdles (operational, technical, and scientific) and propose solutions under supervision.
  • Manage study timelines and objectives, ensuring accuracy of study data within corporate databases and project tracking tools.
  • Communicate study results and data interpretation to cross-functional project teams.
  • Comply with US and company-specific rules and regulations, e.g., Animal Welfare Act, The Guide, 3R principles, FDA and other regulatory bodies.
  • Promote and uphold a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the laboratory.
  • Associate's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience or Bachelor's degree with 1+ year of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrable passion for animal care and welfare.
  • Strong technical and scientific skills and a willingness to understand the R&D process.
  • Experience with ocular research techniques and imaging equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to independently recognize challenges (technical, scientific, or study-related) and provide relevant input for solution/problem solving.
