Become a part of the “strength within.” Hexcel is currently seeking a Scientist III for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location. The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

Requirements

  • PhD in Organic/Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of industry experience
  • Extensive understanding of polymer processing and properties
  • Experience with various production techniques, including extrusion, injection molding, compounding, mixing, compression molding, spraying, and casting.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills
  • Technical report writing, data collection/analysis, strong attention to detail, and ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • Eligible candidates must be a: U.S. citizen, U.S. national, person lawfully admitted for permanent residence, temporary resident under sections 210(a) or 245(A) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, person admitted in refugee status, or person granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high temperature materials, epoxy, BMI, cyanate ester, and thermoplastic chemistries preferred.
  • Experience applying Six Sigma techniques to the development, optimization, and sustainment of novel products and processes.
  • Industry experience with carbon fiber reinforced product development preferred.
  • Experience with high-temperature polymer matrices and precursors for carbon-carbon composites preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Hone and utilize materials expertise in the development of next generation composite materials.
  • Specify appropriate polymer systems to meet environmental exposure requirements for custom applications.
  • Develop formulations to target specific composite properties.
  • Produce proof-of-concept, lab-scale and pilot-scale samples.
  • Characterize composition and mechanical properties of developmental materials.
  • Assist in transition to production, including specifying or modifying equipment and developing production-scale manufacturing processes.
  • Act as technical liaison during customer meetings to assist with product selection or define a new product development effort.
  • Understand the key business goals and identify strategic opportunities that align with business and government needs.
  • Independently plan, execute and manage multiple development projects in a results-oriented environment to support the growth of the composites business with minimal supervision.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members and technicians to deliver and support projects.
  • Conduct patent and literature landscape reviews to identify opportunities and protect IP.
  • Assist factory with troubleshooting production issues.
