About The Position

Vir Biotechnology, Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on powering the immune system to transform lives by discovering and developing medicines for serious infectious diseases and cancer. Vir's clinical-stage portfolio includes infectious disease programs for chronic hepatitis delta and chronic hepatitis B infections, in addition to multiple oncology programs. Vir also has a preclinical portfolio of programs across a range of other infectious diseases and oncologic malignancies. The Vir Biotechnology Structural Biology and Protein Sciences group is seeking an experienced protein scientist to join our dynamic and collaborative team. The successful candidate will be responsible to deliver purified, recombinant protein for structural biology, biochemical, and biophysical studies to support Vir's drug discovery efforts. This individual will also be responsible for the biophysical characterization of proteins and protein complexes, and will be a key member on project teams. This role is located in our San Francisco headquarters with an expectation of at least 4 days per week in office.

Requirements

  • PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular and cell biology, structural biology or related field and 3+ years of relevant industry experience or MS with 6+ years additional industry experience.
  • Experience with current protein production methods, techniques, and equipment (e.g., affinity, ion exchange and SEC).
  • Demonstrated track record of generating high-quality recombinant protein for structural biology, biophysics or assay development in a timely manner.
  • Background in biophysical methods of protein characterization; experience with surface plasmon resonance or bio-layer interferometry is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of mammalian expression systems and E. coli.
  • Familiarity with antibody engineering and production.
  • Prior industry experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan the protein production workflow for the generation of antigens, antibodies (various formats), and other proteins in collaboration with project teams.
  • Perform all relevant steps of the gene-to-protein process, including construct design, expression, purification, and biochemical/biophysical protein characterization.
  • Evaluate target feasibility through research of existing information, such as publications, patents, structures, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize expression and purification processes.
  • Design and perform biophysical assays to characterize proteins, especially kinetic binding assays (SPR and BLI); and analyze, interpret, and communicate results.
  • Perform post-purification modifications such as biotinylation, probe conjugation, etc.
  • Manage CROs for gene synthesis, protein production and other tasks as required.
  • Represent the Structural Biology and Protein Sciences group and make key contributions in project teams.
  • Maintain a current understanding of relevant literature, methodologies and technologies related to protein chemistry as well as to specific drug discovery projects.
  • Present results internally and externally.
  • Possibility of managing direct reports.
