About The Position

The Social Studies & Science Specialist is a certified instructional leader responsible for improving student achievement in both content areas. This educator provides curriculum leadership, instructional coaching, and targeted support to teachers and students. The role includes leading the development of TEKS-aligned instructional resources, supporting effective classroom practices, analyzing assessment data, and promoting a school-wide culture of inquiry, critical thinking, and academic excellence in Social Studies and Science.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Studies, Science, or related field
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with applicable certification in Social Studies and/or Science.
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience in one or both content areas.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring, and curriculum development.
  • Deep understanding of TEKS, STAAR assessments, and instructional design in science and social studies.
  • Strong collaboration, leadership, data analysis, and communication skills.

  • Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction or related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and refinement of: Six-week instructional calendars Year-at-a-Glance (YAG) documents Vertically and horizontally aligned TEKS-based curriculum maps
  • Ensure lesson planning incorporates high-impact instructional strategies, vocabulary development, content literacy, and inquiry-based learning.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate cross-curricular connections and support for English Language Learners and diverse learners.
  • Work with and coach teachers on effective instructional strategies, student engagement techniques, and intervention practices for both science and social studies.
  • Model lessons, co-teach, and provide actionable feedback based on classroom observations.
  • Plan and deliver professional development sessions and ongoing support aligned to district goals and state standards.
  • Mentor and train new teachers, including guidance on curriculum tools, state standards, and content-specific pedagogy.
  • Guide the development and use of common formative and summative assessments aligned with the TEKS.
  • Support teachers in using assessment data to drive instruction and identify student learning gaps.
  • Monitor student performance on district benchmarks, classroom assessments, and STAAR to inform targeted instructional support.
  • Provide small-group or individual intervention for students needing additional support in science and social studies content.
  • Support the use of inquiry-based labs, historical thinking strategies, and technology tools that enhance student understanding and engagement.
  • Participate in RTI and IEP meetings to provide recommendations for accommodations and strategies in both subjects.
  • Work collaboratively with campus administrators, instructional coaches, and content teams to ensure cohesive instruction.
  • Serve as a liaison between the campus and district departments for Social Studies and Science.
  • Maintain open communication with parents and families regarding student progress and engagement in content areas.
  • Promote a positive academic culture that values critical thinking, civic awareness, scientific inquiry, and student voice.
  • Organize and support campus-wide academic initiatives, such as science fairs, history projects, STEM/STEAM nights, or civic engagement events.
  • Stay informed of updates to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for both content areas.
  • Remain current on STAAR redesign, instructional strategies, and state-mandated programs or initiatives.
  • Participate in required and recommended professional learning at the district and state level.
