About The Position

The Science Lab Technician for Physical Sciences plays a crucial role in supporting laboratory activities by preparing, setting up, and cleaning up laboratory environments. This position requires adherence to safety regulations and established procedures while assisting with various scientific experiments across multiple disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and geology. The technician will work under the supervision of the Science Laboratory Manager and is expected to maintain laboratory equipment and inventory, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Typically three or more years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting, including preparation and dilution of chemical solutions and hazardous material training.
  • Operational knowledge in areas such as chemistry, biochemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy, earth science, and geology.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer systems, including Microsoft Office Products and specialized computer systems.
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with a diverse employee and student population.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares labs according to the assigned functional discipline, including chemistry, biochemistry, physics, oceanography, astronomy, earth science, and geology.
  • Assists with preparation, dilution, and standardization of chemical solutions, including calculating concentrations and measuring temperature, volume, and mass.
  • Cleans and returns the lab to its original condition after daily activities, disinfecting surfaces and supplies, and making minor repairs as necessary.
  • Assists the lab manager with gravimetric analysis and determining physical properties such as melting and boiling points, as well as maintaining pH electrodes and calibrating spectrophotometers.
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment relevant to the functional discipline.
  • Properly disposes of all waste materials according to safety and regulatory protocols.
  • Assists faculty with lab activities as needed.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation by cleaning and testing/calibrating before class begins.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $36,800 - $43,240, commensurate with education and experience.
  • Full-time regular position with a 40-hour work week.
