About The Position

Lead coverage of science and medicine in a dynamic market for research and medical treatment. The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is a fast-paced, competitive market with a wide range of scientific research occurring at universities and medical institutions, as well as breaking science news appealing to local readers. With versatility as a hallmark, this fellow will produce breaking news, in-depth explanatory stories and human-interest features in the areas of science and medicine.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • 1-3 years of reporting experience, preferably in a fast-paced news environment
  • Demonstrated strong reporting and writing skills
  • Strong ability to translate scientific knowledge into stories accessible to an educated and engaged audience
  • Good news judgment, accuracy, speed, grammatical precision, a flair for headlines, energy, curiosity and an eye toward digital success
  • Ability to use social media for newsgathering and audience development
  • Ability to handle multiple stories at the same time
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Understanding of platforms and audiences and ability to compose stories appropriate to the platform of publication (e.g., voice, style, formatting, hyperlinks)
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across newsroom departments
  • Willingness to cover a variety of topics
  • Must have a valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in Spanish is an advantage

Responsibilities

  • Report on science and medicine news across the Dallas-Fort Worth area through a utility lens that serves the audience
  • Explain complex topics in a clear and compelling way
  • Develop smart enterprise off national and local news, as well as write about scientists, researchers and ordinary people affected by the problems scientists are trying to solve
  • Build relationships across D-FW, particularly with sources within the medical and science community, but also with community leaders and Dallas-Fort Worth residents
  • Work collaboratively with other desks in the newsroom, including the visuals team, data team and our audience journalists to ensure we are telling compelling stories with multiple layers
  • Build and engage with an audience for science and medicine coverage through digital storytelling and social media, as well as through audio and video
  • Collaborate with staff members on community engagement events to spark conversations about science and medicine
