About The Position

The school social worker focuses on coordinating the efforts of the school, family, and community toward helping students overcome barriers that interfere with learning and improve their academic achievement and social, emotional, and behavioral competence.

Requirements

  • Minimum of bachelor's of Social Work degree required
  • licensed as a social worker by the Mississippi Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists
  • valid driver's license
  • Employee acknowledges that he/she is required to maintain a high standard of professional conduct in compliance with the Mississippi Code of Ethics. Breach of said professional conduct includes but is not limited to: neglect of duty, dishonesty, and engagement in acts that are contrary to VWSD policy, unlawful activities, or any other conduct which is seriously prejudicial to the school district. In addition, school social workers should adhere to the professional ethical responsibilities delineated in the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics

Responsibilities

  • Perform school social work services with families as an integral part of helping students, to increase parents' understanding of relevant concerns, to increase their constructive participation and involvement in addressing their children's needs, and assist them accessing appropriate resources. Perform home visits as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between the home, school, and community agencies/organizations on behalf of students by consulting and collaborating regularly with involved stakeholders to enable access of resources and provide efficient and accountable coordination of services.
  • Collaborate with parents to complete a social developmental history report as needed as part of the assessment process to determine eligibility for special education.
  • Serve on interdisciplinary teams within the school district when requested.
  • Provide consultation to administrators, teachers, and other school-based professionals on broad issues of mental health, trauma, parental involvement, child abuse and neglect identification and reporting, special education services, program development, etc. as needed.
  • Act as a member of the district crisis response team to provide assessment, intervention, and follow-up as needed to individual students, groups of students, and school personnel in situations involving traumatic events, behavioral or mental health emergencies, and other crises.
  • Participate in community-based meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with other school social workers in providing management and dissemination of the resources available through the VWSD uniform and school supply closet.
  • Develop, plan, and provide in-service training programs for other school-based professionals and psychoeducational programs for parents as needed or requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
