About The Position

Under the supervision of the Program Leader and working as a member of the site/program team, SSO helps keep the school environment safe, calm, and ready for learning. The role blends security, prevention, student support, and emergency response.

Responsibilities

  • Safety & Security Monitor entrances, exits, hallways, and school grounds
  • Control visitor access and check IDs
  • Patrol campus to prevent trespassing, fights, or unsafe behavior
  • Watch surveillance cameras and alarm systems
  • Identify and report hazards (broken locks, unsafe areas, suspicious activity)
  • Student & Staff Support Build positive relationships with students (visible, approachable presence)
  • De-escalate conflicts and disruptive situations
  • Assist during student crises (emotional distress, medical issues)
  • Support anti-bullying and violence-prevention efforts
  • Serve as a trusted adult where students can go to for help
  • Policy Enforcement Enforce school rules and district safety policies
  • Address prohibited items (weapons, drugs, vaping devices, etc.)
  • Document incidents and write reports
  • Work with administrators on disciplinary processes
  • Emergency Response Respond to fights, medical emergencies, or threats
  • Assist with lockdowns, evacuations, fire drills, and severe weather procedures
  • Coordinate with police, fire, and EMS when needed
  • Help implement crisis response plans
  • Prevention & Preparedness Participate in safety planning and threat assessments
  • Conduct routine safety checks and drills
  • Provide safety education (stranger awareness, emergency procedures)
  • Stay trained in CPR, first aid, and crisis intervention
  • Collaboration Work closely with principals, counselors, teachers, and nurses
  • Communicate concerns about student behavior or safety risks
  • Partner with families and community services when needed
  • Administrative Duties Maintain logs, reports, and security records
  • Review camera footage when incidents occur
  • Help improve safety procedures and protocols
