Los Angeles Unified School District
4d$23 - $28

About The Position

We are LAUSD. We are at the forefront of innovation in public education, focused on a clear and inspiring vision of the future for all of our students as they venture forward on their journey as lifelong learners. Here, you will have the opportunity to exercise your potential in a role supporting the business of education. Our work directly contributes toward the goal of ensuring that our students graduate ready for the world – ready to thrive in college, career and life. LAUSD is the second largest school district in the nation with an enrollment of nearly 575,000 students. We serve an area totaling 710 square miles, with over 1,190 schools and educational centers, and we employ over 74,000 individuals, making us one of the largest employers in our city. The Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) was established in August of 1948 to create a safe and tranquil environment for the students, teachers and staff of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The men and women of the LASPD have accepted this duty with an unyielding commitment that has not wavered for over seven decades. The LASPD provides police services to the second-largest school district in the nation. The department has operational jurisdiction of 710 square miles, 24 hours a day. The members of this vital department are responsible for the safety of all students and staff of this district. An ideal School Safety Officer is a vigilant professional with a strong sense of responsibility for both campus and public safety. They maintain a constant, observant presence across school buildings and grounds—proactively identifying, reporting, and helping prevent safety hazards, unauthorized access, and potential emergencies before they escalate. Grounded in an “observe and report” approach, they know that early awareness and clear communication are key to keeping a school environment safe. When issues arise, they respond with confidence and sound judgment, assisting with incidents such as equipment leaks, minor fires, or other safety concerns while promptly notifying the appropriate authorities. Beyond safeguarding property, they serve as a visible, approachable leader—supervising students in hallways and at school events, and providing reassurance through a calm, professional presence. A successful School Safety Officer is also a strong communicator who works collaboratively with school staff, parents, and public safety partners, leads safety briefings, and manages traffic and campus activity with care and professionalism. Above all, they are reliable team players who take pride in doing whatever is needed—from supporting a student in distress to securing campus perimeters—to protect and strengthen the entire school community.
