About The Position

The school psychologist is responsible for providing psychological services needed for the students of the school division, evaluating students for various programs, and providing crisis intervention services.

Requirements

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills
Use of standard office machines
Knowledge of the evaluation assessments and the procedures for administering, scoring, interpreting results
Ability to manage complex projects with multiple components
Ability to work with a diverse population in groups and in individual settings
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Knowledge of best practices in child development
Knowledge of various disabilities or other programs requiring assessments to be able to interpret results to identification into the programs
Knowledge of community resources for referrals beyond the scope of the school-based teams
Ability to clearly explain the results of evaluations to parents, committees and students (as appropriate)
Knowledge of and ability to gain rapport with students to facilitate counseling sessions
Ability to maintain confidentiality for evaluation and counseling sessions
Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Pupil Personnel Services License with an endorsement in School Psychology and Virginia Board of Psychology licensure as a School Psychologist-Limited.
A Masters degree in school psychology is required.

Responsibilities

Provide psychological services for students to assist in the measurement and interpretation of their intellectual, social, physical, emotional, and educational development
Assist in the identification of disabilities and provide practical recommendations for the implementation in the classroom
Prepare clearly written, comprehensive psychological reports which address the referral issues and provide practical recommendations that can be realistically implemented by school personnel and used to assist in the development of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP)
Provide psycho-educational consultation to teachers, counselors, administrators and other school personnel, and parents to assist with the resolution or accommodation of school-related problems
Provide brief individual and/or group counseling to students and parents as needed to assist with the resolution or accommodation of school-related problems
Serve as a member of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) teams, Special Education Eligibility Committees, and Individualized Education Plan teams as requested
Participates in threat assessment processes
Maintain accurate and careful records of all psychological services provided
Follow federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies regarding children’s educational welfare and serve as an advocate for students and parents
Maintain high professional and ethical standards as delineated in principals for Professional Ethics (National Association of School Psychologists) and Ethical Principles of Psychologists (American Psychological Association)
Assist with the development and provision of in-service programs related to child behavior, child development, special programs, and preventative mental health in the school setting
Serve as liaison between the schools and consulting clinical psychologist, psychiatrists, and mental health agencies
Serve as a member of appropriate community groups or committees as requested
Interpret to school division stakeholders the psychological services of the school system
Maintain liaison with community and state organizations related to psychological services
Cooperate in school division follow up and research projects to enhance the effectiveness of instructional programs for students
Attend professional workshops and conferences to refine skills and gain new competencies
Keep abreast of the professional literature in order to remain current for ways in which psychological services to students can be improved and make suggestions and recommendations
Perform other duties as assigned
