The School Psychologist position at Detroit Public Schools Community District is a full-time role that spans 10 months, primarily focused on supporting school-aged children and their families. The psychologist will work across various locations within the district, reporting directly to the Principal or their designee, as well as the Supervisor of the Office of School Psychologist. This role is critical in ensuring that students receive the necessary psychological support and interventions to thrive academically and socially. The position is part of the Detroit Federation of Teachers bargaining unit and offers a competitive salary range of $55,000 to $91,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Additionally, the district is offering a $15,000 retention/recruitment certification bonus for educators holding valid Michigan School Psychologist Certification for the 2024-2025 school year. The School Psychologist will be responsible for demonstrating a thorough understanding of federal and state special education laws, identifying at-risk students, and developing appropriate academic and behavioral interventions. The role requires the administration of comprehensive psychological evaluations for students aged birth to 26 years, with a focus on various disability areas, including cognitive impairment and specific learning disabilities. Collaboration with staff and participation in multidisciplinary evaluation teams are essential components of the job, as is the ability to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and provide crisis intervention and psychotherapy when necessary. In addition to direct student support, the School Psychologist will also be tasked with providing professional development to school staff regarding special education laws and best practices. Excellent communication skills are vital for effective consultation with students, parents, and staff, as well as for attending meetings and professional development activities as required. The position does not allow for telecommuting, and successful candidates will need to undergo a criminal background check as per district policy.
