About The Position

The School Resource Officer (SRO) will perform regular law enforcement duties as determined by the PSOE Chief of Police and the school principal. Specific duties of the SRO will be determined by PSOE leadership based on the school’s specific needs. The SRO will support and facilitate the educational process within Paramount Schools by providing a safe and secure campus, establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff and proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of city and state laws, preserving public order, and the prevention, detection and investigation of crime. The SRO will work effectively with students, parents, school personnel and community agencies to support teaching and learning in schools. The SRO will patrol Paramount properties to protect students, staff and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss to Paramount property resulting from criminal activity. The SRO shall consult with local law enforcement officials and first responders to assist PSOE’s school safety specialist with the development, implementation and effective operation of a school safety plan that protects against inside and outside threats to the physical safety of students; prevents unauthorized access to school property; and secures schools against violence and natural disasters. Although the SRO is not generally involved in school disciplinary measures, the SRO shall help maintain a safe and effective learning environment.

Requirements

  • Valid Indiana Driver’s license
  • Bachelor of Science/Arts degree
  • A minimum 3-5 years of work experience in law enforcement
  • Successful completion of pre-basic training course established under IC 5-2-1-9(f);
  • Minimum basic training and educational requirements adopted by the law enforcement training board under IC 5-2-1-9 as necessary for employment as a law enforcement officer.
  • Annual training and/or professional development is required for all PSOE employees. Job-specific training is identified and scheduled by the School Principal or direct supervisor in partnership with Paramount C-suite.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as visible and active law enforcement officer on campus dealing with law related areas such as traffic, trespassing, fighting, and theft.
  • Coordinate security for crowd and vehicle control at extra-curricular activities and special events. Monitor and instruct students, visitors and personnel on proper and lawful campus behavior. Help to maintain a respectful code of conduct.
  • Patrol property for suspicious activity, unauthorized persons on campus, or unauthorized entry after hours.
  • Work closely with the Chief of Police and school principal to foster a better understanding of the law enforcement function to maintain a secure learning environment.
  • Proactively collaborate with school leadership team on safety protocols and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with public safety agencies to serve as a liaison between school and community to deter criminal and delinquent behavior.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies with incidents involving local criminal activity that may impact the safety of the environment for students and staff.
  • Conduct security building assessments for all schools.
  • Willingness to work before and after hours as assigned by the Chief of Police to provide security coverage, investigate and patrol.
  • Operate a two-way radio and qualify with a department issued firearm.
