SUMMARY: The School Occupational Therapist supports the educational goals of students by promoting participation and performance in the school environment. The OT evaluates and provides interventions to address students’ fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, and functional school-based skills to enable access to the curriculum and full participation in school life.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
  • Valid state licensure or certification as an Occupational Therapist.
  • National Board Certified as an OTR (Occupational Therapist Registered).
  • Experience working with children and adolescents, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Personal computer and keyboarding skills.
  • Strong customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Authorizer policies and building and department procedures
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel between school sites as needed.
  • Must be able to lift 20–30 pounds occasionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of school-based therapy models (e.g., MTSS, push-in services, pull out services, etc.).
  • Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.
  • Experience with assistive technology and sensory integration strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct occupational therapy assessments to determine students' functional capabilities and needs in the educational setting.
  • Participate in the development and review of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Interpret and report assessment results to IEP teams, including parents, teachers, and other specialists.
  • Develop and implement individualized therapy plans aligned with IEP goals.
  • Provide direct and consultative occupational therapy services in classrooms, therapy rooms, and other school settings.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices to improve students' fine motor skills, visual-motor integration, sensory processing, and self-care skills.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special educators, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and families.
  • Provide training and resources to staff and families to support carryover of strategies.
  • Serve as a resource in modifying classroom environments and materials to support student success.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of evaluations, progress reports, treatment plans, and service logs.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and all district/state guidelines.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of student goals and accommodations.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of school-based OT practices.
  • Participate in professional development and district initiatives.
  • Support universal design for learning (UDL) and inclusive educational practices.
