About The Position

Springfield Prep Charter School is a K-8 public charter school in Springfield, Massachusetts that prepares all students for high school, college, and life. The School Nurse supports the day-to-day management of the school health office to ensure high-quality medical care for our students. The School Nurse will report to the Director of School Service Operations and work in collaboration with the Nurse Leader.

Requirements

  • Strong desire to be a part of a high-performing team
  • Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
  • Valid School Nurse License in MA or willing to meet the criteria to obtain a School Nurse License (this includes holding a Bachelor's degree)
  • Experience as a nurse in schools or in child and/or community health
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Organized and detail-oriented and with a track record of managing multiple priorities effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referral for appropriate medical care of students with acute or chronic health conditions
  • Supervise prescribed medical treatments and medication administration in accordance with all regulations
  • Coordinate the provision of first aid supplies
  • Conduct vision and hearing screenings; coordinate dental screenings
  • Assist in the development of all health-related policies and procedures
  • Develop a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school
  • Monitor compliance with current state immunization and health assessment requirements
  • Build relationships with other medical providers in Springfield and surrounding communities
  • Prepare health reports for school leadership, the Department of Education and the Department of Public Health
  • Monitor the spread of contagious illness and draft management plans as necessary
  • Educate families regarding health-related issues through written communication, verbal contact, and home visits when necessary
  • Train staff regarding medication administration, medical procedures, acute/chronic illness management, prevention and control of communicable diseases, emergency care, and other health-related issues
  • Provide assistance and counseling of students with psychological and medical concerns and/or physical limitations; ensure that the environment is suitable for students with conditions such as asthma
  • Serve as consultant and resource for health and wellness promotion, e.g., hygiene, nutrition, increasing physical activity, and weight management
  • Provide information regarding the availability of community resources and assist families in the utilization of health care and treatment services
