The School Nurse provides services such as referring, record keeping and reporting of immunizations, health screen findings and other relevant health data in order to comply with federal, state and local laws regulations and policies. As well as help prevent serious health problems which could later be more difficult and costly to address. Requirements

  • Certified Registered Nurse (RN) OR (Licensed Vocational Nurse) with a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state where the school is located and holds an unrestricted license;
  • Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing or pediatric nursing
  • Knowledge of principles and practices underlying professional nursing
  • Knowledge/understanding of principles and practices underlying the special field of school health; Familiarity with current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues
  • Ability to work cooperatively with appropriate agencies
  • Ability to clear required background check
  • Ability to travel for school meetings/professional development

Responsibilities

  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of all students;
  • Provides resources, and/or locations for families to complete the required vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening requirements for Texas students;
  • Coordinates with the social workers/counselors/advisors to located resources for parents;
  • Obtains health histories; Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students;
  • Monitor compliance of the school health program with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies
  • Record immunizations, health screen findings, and other relevant health data in local, state and federal database
  • Adhere to requirements for confidentiality regarding student records
  • Works with families to complete all required immunizations and manages the immunization process which includes gathering missing documentation, ensuring both the K12 and district systems are updated to reflect changes; creates and maintains database of local resources for low-cost immunization providers;
  • Prepare any required reports for the school district partners;
  • Follows all state and federal health codes and laws; works to remain compliant with required health regulations;
