About The Position

The major focus of health services in the school setting is the promotion of health and wellness among students and staff, and the early detection and treatment of health problems. The school nurse promotes and protects the physical and emotional well-being of students by providing evidence-based nursing services, coordinating care, and collaborating with staff and families. This position plays a critical role in managing acute and chronic health conditions, reducing barriers to learning, and supporting a healthy school environment in accordance with Missouri laws and Carthage R9 District policies.

Requirements

  • RN or LPN in good standing with license to practice in the State of Missouri
  • Current CPR/AED certification (AHA or American Red Cross)
  • Must be in good health due to continuous exposure to communicable disease
  • Must be able to make critical, independent, health-related judgements in life-threatening situations
  • Must have strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
  • Must have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality under FERPA and HIPAA regulations
  • Must have the ability to represent the Carthage R9 School District in a positive, helpful, friendly manner
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance.
  • Ability to perform CPR and other emergency procedures.
  • Ability to wear PPE appropriately as needed.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled nursing care including first aid, emergency response, and evaluation of illness or injury.
  • Perform health assessments for students with acute symptoms and communicate findings to parents/guardians.
  • Perform annual screenings per district policy and send out referrals as needed.
  • Develop, implement, and update Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with chronic or complex medical needs.
  • Assist school personnel with development and implementation of 504s and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as needed.
  • Administer medications and treatments following district policy, physician orders, and Missouri Board of Nursing standards.
  • Perform specialized procedures as ordered by physicians (e.g., glucose monitoring, insulin administration, catheterizations, tube feeding, asthma treatments).
  • Monitor communicable disease, identify symptoms for early detection, and follow district/state reporting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with state immunization requirements.
  • Assist families as needed in obtaining necessary immunizations.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records using district-approved documentation.
  • Provide student, staff, and family education on health-related issues.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, healthcare providers, and community resources.
  • Other duties or related tasks as assigned by supervisors or administrators.
