The district-wide Float Nurse supports student health services across all schools by providing direct care promoting wellness and assisting with health-related programs and screenings. The role requires adaptability, as the nurse will rotate between schools based on daily or emergent needs. The nurse will collaborate with school administrators, staff, families, and healthcare providers to support the physical, emotional, and educational well-being of all students.

  • Provide direct nursing care to students based on licensure, including medication administration, treatment, and emergency response.
  • Rotate between schools as assigned by the Lead Nurse to address immediate or short-term health service needs.
  • Assess and monitor students for illness, injury, or chronic conditions; provide first aid and health interventions as needed.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with medical needs in coordination with healthcare providers and families.
  • Participate in Section 504 and IEP meetings when health-related input is required.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential health records and document all care provided.
  • Communicate with families regarding student health concerns, incidents, and treatment.
  • Support communicable disease control and report as required by district and state guidelines.
  • Provide preventive health education, screenings, and referrals in collaboration with school staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, medical professionals, and school personnel.
  • Facilitate Telemed visits for students and staff district wide as needed.
  • Assist with district wide health initiatives such as health screenings and AED drills.
  • Respond to school-wide medical emergencies and safety concerns.
  • Train and support school staff in basic health procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Report suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with Tennessee law and district policy.
  • Prepare and submit required health service documentation and reports.
  • Maintain working knowledge of nursing practice standards and comply with Board of Nursing regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support student success and program operations.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Current Tennessee licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Current CPR/BLS certification
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Knowledge of: Professional nursing standards and school health regulations
  • Child development, chronic illness management, and communicable disease control
  • FERPA, HIPAA, and confidentiality guidelines related to student health
  • Emergency response procedures and medical documentation practices
  • Health-related policies, procedures, and state immunization requirements
  • Skill in: Providing care in urgent, routine, and preventive situations
  • Communicating effectively with students, families, staff, and medical personnel
  • Managing rotating assignments, varying student needs, and multiple school environments
  • Using health record systems and technology to document and manage care
  • Training and supporting staff in basic medical procedures and health protocols
  • Ability to: Adapt quickly to different school environments and respond to changing priorities
  • Remain calm, focused, and effective in medical emergencies
  • Collaborate with educators, administrators, and external health professionals
  • Build rapport with students and families across diverse backgrounds
  • Maintain accurate records and manage sensitive information with discretion
  • Prioritize tasks, exercise sound judgment, and work independently with minimal supervision
