About The Position

The Springfield Public Schools is seeking a School Nurse (RN) to join our team. The position involves assessing and evaluating students' health, maintaining health records, and coordinating health resources within the school and community. The School Nurse will provide emergency care, administer medications, and participate in health screenings and education programs. This role requires collaboration with school staff and health agencies to ensure the well-being of students. The work schedule will be arranged with the Principal and Nursing Supervisor, in accordance with contract requirements.

Requirements

  • Must have a current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
  • Three years of responsible professional experience in school nursing or a related field preferred.
  • Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
  • Must be DOE certified or certifiable by the Department of Education in educator category, Nurse, All Levels.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and evaluate students' health, including pertinent family history and home factors.
  • Counsel students, parents, and school personnel about health problems and issues.
  • Maintain health records and evaluate school health programs.
  • Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health-related problems.
  • Coordinate health resources of school, home, community, and allied health agencies.
  • Prepare regular written reports for supervisor, MDPH, and other relevant agencies.
  • Develop individual health care plans and coordinate with other providers and school personnel.
  • Document pertinent information in student records according to the Standards of Practice.
  • Provide emergency care for all students on school premises.
  • Administer medications to students with parent/guardian and physician consent.
  • Perform mandated screenings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, TB testing, and other health-related activities.
  • Provide information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs.
  • Participate in school health-related activities as deemed appropriate.
  • Act as a resource in health education to students and families.
  • Initiate, promote, maintain, and implement programs for disease recognition, prevention, and control.
  • Participate in 766 Core evaluation team by coordinating medical evaluations and providing medical data.
  • Collaborate with staff in school and health centers.
  • Provide sport physical clearance coverage as needed.
