Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care & Assessment: Provide professional nursing assessment, triage, and management of student illness and injury.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and condition-specific management plans (e.g., diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies) in collaboration with families and healthcare providers.
  • Safely administer and delegate medications and health procedures in accordance with state law and school policy.
  • Lead the school’s emergency response/first responder team.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Chronic Disease Management & Staff Training: Coordinate care for students with chronic health conditions, including development of Diabetes Medical Management Plans as required.
  • Train and delegate appropriate school personnel to support students with specialized health needs.
  • Provide required annual staff training on state-mandated health topics (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, diabetes care, allergies, AED use, emergency response).
  • Compliance, Public Health & Emergency Preparedness: Maintain and utilize access to the North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR) to verify immunization compliance and ensure accurate state reporting.
  • Review immunization records, notify families of deficiencies, and ensure compliance with state requirements.
  • Conduct school-wide communicable disease surveillance by monitoring illness trends and absenteeism patterns; implement mitigation measures as appropriate.
  • Maintain the school’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certificate in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Ensure emergency preparedness by maintaining epinephrine auto-injector supplies and verifying that Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are functional and up to date.
  • Complete and submit required state health reports by established deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential health records in accordance with FERPA and state regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Orange County Health Department as needed.
  • Health Promotion & Prevention: Maintain PBNC certification and conduct required vision screenings.
  • Provide health education and consultation to students, staff, and families.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians and school personnel regarding student health needs.
  • Health Office & Resource Management: Maintain health office supplies, equipment, and first aid kits; order medical supplies in accordance with school procedures.
  • Maintain documentation of health visits, medications administered, medication counts, and reportable conditions.
  • Support environmental health practices within the school setting.
  • Professional Requirements: Maintain an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Attend fall and spring meetings with the State School Health Consultant.
  • Visitor Management & School Safety: Serve as the primary point of contact for visitors, students, and families.
  • Implement and enforce school visitor safety protocols and check-in/out procedures.
  • Monitor/manage building entry and ensure compliance with school security policies.
  • Communication & Front Office Support: Answer and direct incoming phone calls in a professional and timely manner.
  • Provide information and assistance regarding school procedures, events, and locations.
  • Support volunteer coordination and assist with general front office needs.
  • Coordinate lunch deliveries and assist with student meal needs; maintain school lunch inventory and notify DBO when replenishment is required.
  • Input daily attendance communications from parents/guardians.
  • Support daily front office operations to ensure efficient workflow
