School Nurse Consultant The School Nurse supports student health, safety, and academic success by providing nursing services, health education, and care coordination within the school setting. The School Nurse ensures compliance with state and federal health regulations and collaborates with families, staff, and community providers to promote a healthy school environment. School Nurse Consultants ensure that school health services contribute to academic access and success by removing health-related barriers to learning. They support schools in creating environments where student physical and mental health needs are safely and effectively met, and they help align school health services with statewide expectations and best practices.

Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) with current licensure (required)
• Experience in school nursing, public health, or pediatric nursing
• Knowledge of MI school nurse certification rules, health laws, and educational environments
• Strong communication, collaboration, and training skills

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) strongly preferred

Responsibilities

• Advise schools on the development and implementation of school health services, nursing practices, and medical protocols.
• Provide virtual consultations to schools in Metro Detroit and West Michigan.
• Offer guidance on Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and medication administration procedures.
• Participate in IEP and Section 504 team meetings as needed.
• Provide staff training outlined in IEPs and Section 504 Plans
• Review medical plans
• Support staff in monitoring health-related accommodations and services
• Collaborate with special education staff and school leaders to support student access and safety
• Lead and provide training for school administrators and other school staff on health-related topics (e.g., emergency response, chronic health condition management, communicable disease control).
