About The Position

Renaissance Secondary School seeks a School Nurse Consultant to support student health and safety across our academic and Adventure Education programs. This role coordinates care for students with significant medical needs, partnering with families, providers, and staff to implement health care plans, 504s, and IEP health supports. The Nurse Consultant trains and delegates to Health Assistants and school personnel, provides oversight and first-aid guidance, and helps ensure safe participation in active and outdoor learning.   • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Special Services Provider License - School Nurse - Colorado Department of Education
  • Registered Nurse License - Colorado

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee individualized Health Care Plans (HCPs) for students with significant medical needs.
  • Collaborate with families, medical providers, and school teams to support health-related components of 504 Plans and IEPs.
  • Ensure safe and equitable access to academic, Adventure Education, and athletic programs for students with medical conditions.
  • Serve as a health consultant to school leadership regarding student safety, prevention practices, and compliance.
  • Train, delegate, and provide supervision to Health Assistants and designated school personnel in accordance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
  • Provide staff training in first aid, medication administration, concussion awareness, and emergency response procedures.
  • Oversee Health Room operations to ensure safe and compliant practices.
  • Educate staff on relevant policies, state laws, immunization requirements, mandated reporting, and infection control protocols.
  • Establish procedures for emergency care and management of illness or injury; provide consultation and referral as appropriate.
  • Support infection prevention and communicable disease response.
  • Oversee medication administration practices and documentation.
  • Coordinate and oversee state-required health screenings, including vision and hearing screening, and ensure appropriate follow-up when indicated.
  • Maintain compliance with state-mandated immunization tracking and student health records.
  • Review and monitor medical information and emergency care plans for Adventure Education voyages, athletic participation, and off-campus programming.
  • Collaborate with Adventure Education leaders, athletic directors, and coaches to ensure safe participation in physically demanding and outdoor activities.
  • Support injury prevention practices, concussion protocols, and return-to-play guidance.
  • Partner with administrators, counselors, special education staff, athletic staff, and families to promote a safe and healthy school environment.
  • Champion proactive, prevention-based health practices aligned with Renaissance’s mission and student-centered approach.
  • Promote and maintain a positive and effective school culture by ensuring that all interactions with staff, students, parents, and the public at large are prompt, efficient, helpful, and friendly
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assess the health of the school community and advocate for physical and emotional safety through collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities.
  • Design disease prevention and health promotion strategies for the students and school staff.
  • Ensure safe delegation of nursing interventions to unlicensed assistive personnel by adhering to the provisions of the Colorado Nurse Practice Act (CRS 12-38-101).
  • Participate as the health expert on the RTI, special education and 504 teams by mitigating health related obstacles to learning.
  • Identify students with health needs requiring modifications or accommodations in the school setting or during school sponsored events and activities.
  • Assure student health information is protected in accordance with Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Participate in comprehensive health education programs and school health policy development.
  • Provide direct health services for the student when appropriate.
  • Obtain and interpret student health data for special education assessments and 504 accommodation plans.
  • Develop a health care plan to meet students’ individual health needs in the school setting.
  • Collaborate with others to fulfill responsibilities related to building district, regional and state goals and priorities.
  • Use evaluation of student outcomes to measure the effectiveness of intervention.
  • Document health related services in designated Medicaid documentation system for the DCSD School Medicaid Reimbursement Program as assigned.
  • Develop lesson plans and/or outlines for identified health education needs.
