About The Position

The School Monitor position at Jefferson Parish Schools involves supervising students during lunch and recess periods to ensure proper discipline and safety. The role requires assisting teachers and administrators with various non-instructional tasks, contributing to a positive school environment. The monitor will oversee students during their lunch breaks, ensuring they adhere to school rules and maintain appropriate behavior. Additionally, the monitor will supervise students during recess or yard duty, providing guidance and support as needed. In this role, the monitor will also be responsible for several administrative tasks as requested by teachers and approved by the principal. This includes making phone calls to the homes of absent students, maintaining up-to-date absentee records, and decorating bulletin boards within the classroom. The monitor may also assist in keeping student data processing records, particularly for middle, junior, or high school students, and help administer first aid when necessary. The position requires the operation of various office machines, including copiers, laminators, and other equipment necessary for daily school operations. The monitor will be tasked with typing tests, reports, and other materials, grading test papers, and updating cumulative folders with the principal's or teacher's approval. Additionally, the monitor will complete student referrals and write behavior reports, which must be co-signed by an administrator. Familiarity with the Student Services Handbook and Personnel Policy Manual is essential, as is the ability to check medical records and send out deficiency notices with principal approval. The work environment is primarily within a school setting, which is climate-controlled, but also includes outdoor areas that may be subject to climate extremes. The monitor's workday will consist of hours at the assigned school site, as determined by the personnel department and school principal. The role requires physical involvement, including sitting, standing, walking, and monitoring student behavior throughout the school day. The monitor must be able to operate office equipment and may need to lift up to 10 pounds or physically restrain a student if necessary. Mental involvement includes understanding written and verbal instructions, working independently, and making decisions in the absence of a supervisor. Human relations skills are crucial, as the monitor must interact positively with students, parents, and staff, responding well to supervision and suggestions for improvement.
