The School Marshal is responsible for providing armed protection and ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors on school premises in accordance with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) School Marshal Program standards and district policies. This position requires maintaining a strong presence on campus, responding to threats and emergencies, and collaborating with law enforcement and district officials to coordinate safety efforts. The School Marshal will also develop and support emergency preparedness, conduct threat assessments, and support a positive school culture.

  • Maintain a strong, discreet presence on campus to deter and detect threats to student and staff safety.
  • Monitor entry and exit points, patrol school grounds and facilities, and identify any unusual or suspicious behavior.
  • Collaborate with school administration to evaluate safety vulnerabilities and implement appropriate security measures.
  • Act immediately to neutralize any threat posing imminent harm, consistent with statutory authorization and use-of-force policies.
  • Serve as the first line of defense in active shooter or life-threatening situations until law enforcement arrives.
  • Participate in lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergency response protocols.
  • Uphold the confidentiality of the marshal's identity as required by Texas Occupations Code.
  • Store and carry a firearm only in accordance with Texas law and local policy.
  • Assist in the development and review of the school's emergency operations plan (EOP).
  • Conduct or participate in regular emergency drills, including lockdown, fire, and active threat drills.
  • Work closely with district police departments, School Resource Officers or local law enforcement agencies to coordinate safety efforts.
  • Monitor for behavioral indicators of potential violence or safety risks among students, staff, or visitors.
  • Maintain logs of patrols, incidents, and safety observations in accordance with district policy.
  • Attend required continuing education and firearms training sessions to maintain TCOLE School Marshal certification.
  • Serve as a role model of ethical behavior, professionalism, and responsible decision-making.
  • Support school events and after-hours functions when needed to maintain a secure environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and Firearm Owner's Identification Card.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) School Marshal Certification.
  • Successfully pass a fingerprint criminal background investigation, physical fitness examination, drug/alcohol screening, mental health evaluation, and firearms proficiency exam.
  • One to three years of experience in law enforcement, security, or a related field preferred.
  • Must meet all requirements of the Texas School Marshal Program under Texas Occupations Code.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong organizational, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of school safety, security and/or law enforcement procedures, practices and related standards, codes, and laws.
  • Credentialed or certified in emergency management (AEM, CEM, TEM or similar).
  • Skilled in use of relevant, security-related technology (e.g., security video systems, mass notification systems, visitor management systems, access control, etc.).
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly in the context of business communications, drafting policies, procedures, operational plans, training materials, fact-gathering, investigations and after-action reports.
  • Skilled in supervisory functions, methods, staffing and evaluation.
