About The Position

Position Overview Bethany School seeks a School Librarian beginning in August 2026 , with flexibility to consider an earlier start for highly qualified candidates. Successful candidates are culturally competent, responsible, caring, and enthusiastic educators who are passionate about literacy and fostering a love of reading in children. The School Librarian manages and maintains the school library while serving as an instructional partner to faculty and a literacy resource for students. The School Librarian is a member of the Special Area Team (SAT) Division and teaches weekly library classes for students in grades K–8, while also supporting schoolwide literacy initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) or related field preferred.
  • Experience working in a library and/or K–12 school setting preferred.
  • A commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Strong classroom and behavior management skills in active learning environments.
  • Strong organizational and systems-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students across developmental levels (K–8).
  • Collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively in team settings.

  • Dependability, professionalism, punctuality, and sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and professionally in writing and verbally.
  • Proficiency in technology and library systems; experience with Google Workspace and school-based instructional platforms preferred.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Teach weekly library classes for students in grades K–8, fostering information literacy, research skills, and a love of reading.
  • Manage and maintain the school library, including organization, cataloging, circulation, and inventory of materials.
  • Curate and maintain an up-to-date, diverse, and developmentally appropriate collection of texts that reflect and celebrate the identities, cultures, and experiences of the Bethany School community.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support classroom instruction, literacy goals, and cross-curricular learning.
  • Support and assist with schoolwide reading initiatives and assessments, including Renaissance STAR, IXL, and Accelerated Reader (AR).
  • Organize and oversee the school's annual Book Fair.
  • Manage and coordinate library volunteers, including scheduling and communication.
  • Promote reading and literacy through programming, displays, special events, and student engagement initiatives.
  • Provide guidance to students in book selection and research, supporting individual interests and reading levels.
  • Maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and well-organized library environment.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, families, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and reflective practice.
  • Uphold and model Bethany School's mission, values, and Episcopal identity.
