About The Position

Join #TeamWake as a School Health Nurse! The Wake County Health and Human Services School Health Program provides School Health Services for 199 Wake County Public Schools. Each school nurses serves 2 schools which may be any combination of preschool, elementary, middle, and/or high schools. Nurses spend 2 days a week at one school and 3 days a week at the other school. School nurses work 8-hour days Monday through Friday and must be present in assigned schools during regular school hours. This school nurse will serve 2 schools in the North Raleigh area of Wake County. Please note that this is a 10-month (part-time/.833 FTE) School Health Nurse position. This position will work from August 16 through June 15 and have June 16 through August 15 off. While this position is paid on a regular, bi-monthly basis, the salary information provided in this job post has been prorated to reflect the actual salary range for a 10-month (part-time/0.833 FTE) employee. Please note that this position is exempt (salaried) and not eligible to earn overtime. NOTE: Upon acceptance of employment, you acknowledge that (i) if you work in the Health Clinics and Public Health Division (including School Health,) influenza immunization is a condition of initial and continued employment, subject to compliance with federal law, and active support, and (ii) Participation in department emergency preparedness and response activities, which may include temporary changes in responsibilities and working hours. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing
  • No specific experience required
  • North Carolina Board of Nursing Licensed Registered Nurse
  • CPR
  • AED
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years or more of school health nursing, pediatric nursing or public health experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Master’s degree in Social Work
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • Experience in Public Health
  • Experience in maternal and child health, home visiting, or Care Management for At Risk Children
  • Ability to work well with children and families
  • Adaptable, organized, self-motivated, reliable
  • Ability to work independently as the only medical professional in the school

  • Familiarity with North Carolina Nursing Practice Act and Delegation Decision Tree

Responsibilities

  • Nursing assessment
  • Health care plan development and implementation
  • Training, delegation, and supervision of unlicensed assistive personnel
  • Consultation with school staff regarding student health issues
  • Case management/care coordination for students with chronic health conditions
  • Vision rescreening, referral, and follow-up
  • Attendance/participation in IEP/504 meetings for student’s with identified medical needs at school
  • Case finding students who may benefit from School Health Services
  • Collaboration with school staff, physicians, families, and community partners to identify and secure services for families and students
