About The Position

The School Health Nurse serves in a grant-funded position responsible for the promotion of nursing services dedicated to the health and well-being of students in Marion County school districts. The position reports to the School Health Coordinator within the Infectious Disease Department, Bureau of Population Health.Essential Job Duties Assists in the planning, preparation, and implementation of both on-site and off-site school immunization clinics. Performs vaccine administration of school students; enters and maintains accurate information into the state registry. Collaborates with other health professionals such as school health staff and public health nurses to ensure appropriate delivery of services. Serves as a resource to the public through community education for school nurses and school administrative staff as it relates to recommended and required vaccines. Provides education to school nurses & staff, students and their families related to common school-aged illnesses, immunizations, and infection prevention and control in school settings in compliance with Indiana Administrative Code. Conducts necessary training for school staff such as Stop the Bleed and CPR. Assists in the compliance and implementation of goals as set out by the IDOH school liaison and MCPHD school health program. Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercises as directed. Participates in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling a minimum of eight (8) hours annually. Accurately enters date into MCPHD’s client management system. Maintains confidentiality of client information in compliance with HIPAA rules and regulations. Participates as needed in the employee health program by administering the annually required influenza vaccine to MPCHD staff. Travels between district health offices, clinics, hospitals, schools, and other agencies as indicated. Completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an NLN accredited college
  • Current Indiana RN license
  • BLS certified.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Ability to function independently; set priorities; flexibility

  • Requires excellent organizational skills, decision-making, good judgment, assessment ability, prioritization & problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a variety of agencies and community partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in public health, immunizations, school health, or infectious disease preferred.
  • 1 or more years previous nursing experience preferred
