About The Position

The School Health Nurse - RN at Roanoke City Public Schools is responsible for collaborating with students, staff, and other members of the health care team to improve the overall health of the students and staff. The nurse will assess, evaluate, and assume primary accountability for the effectiveness of health services and care plans. Utilizing critical thinking skills, the nurse will provide quality service through a team-oriented, collaborative approach to student health. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating student health within the school district to achieve optimum health outcomes and maximize in-class time, addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of all students. The nurse will also review health records for entering students, maintain student health records, provide care for students presenting with illness or injury, administer medications, and provide treatments as directed by physicians and parents. The role requires functioning independently in the school clinic and providing training and guidance to staff in the absence of the nurse.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing.
  • Must have a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • One year of supervised nursing experience in community or pediatric nursing preferred.
  • Current RN licensure; BLS required.
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency requirements.
  • Keyboarding and other computer skills required for maintenance of EMR.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate student health within the school district.
  • Review health records for entering students and assure compliance with Virginia Department of Health entrance requirements.
  • Maintain student health records; collect health-related data and complete required reports.
  • Provide care for all students presenting with illness, injury or special needs.
  • Administer medications and provide treatments for students as directed by physicians and parents.
  • Provide care and first aid in times of serious illness or injury until arrival of parent/guardian or EMS.
  • Support evidenced-based, quality student health service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Function independently in the school clinic with occasional support from School Nurse Manager.
  • Provide training, education, and guidance to principal's designees in healthcare procedures.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and patient care.
  • Maintain the readiness of the clinic for provision of care.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, co-workers, community agencies, and other health care providers.
