About The Position

The Health Aide provides support and assistance with the efficient operation of the health offices in the district. To accomplish these tasks, the Health Aide, under direct supervision of the RNs, provides support to the district nurses, teachers and administration where needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; basic healthcare training preferred
  • Minimum 1 year in health care setting preferred
  • Certified in Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid; knowledge of universal precautions; strong interpersonal and organizational skills; basic computer skills; excellent attention to detail and accuracy; acceptable completion of district training as per skills list.
  • Basic data collection skills: i.e., vital signs (temporal temperature, radial pulse, adult and pediatric blood pressure, respirations)
  • Respiratory safety: i.e., nebulizers and inhalers
  • Wound care: i.e., appropriately cleaning of and dressing of wounds (scrapes, abrasions, etc.)
  • Medication administration: i.e., oral, nasal, ophthalmic, otic and topical medications; gastrostomy tubes; use of emergency medications, i.e., Epi-pens, rectal Diastat, nasal versed, Glucagon
  • Diabetes care: per American Diabetes Association and Oklahoma State Department of Health guidelines and per student's physician orders
  • Procedures that may be delegated to health aides include (but not limited to): urinary catherization, colostomy care, gastrostomy tube care, gastrostomy tube feedings, oral suctioning
  • Ability to use sound judgment in any situation.
  • Ability to receive and appropriately respond to directions of a Supervising Nurse and/or administrator.
  • Must be able to deal successfully and rapidly with changes in assignments and properly respond to complaints.
  • Must build harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with district staff, students and the public while achieving the objectives of the job.
  • Handles problematic and/or difficult situations by communicating to the appropriate person.
  • Able to be in attendance for assigned work schedule with 95% minimum attendance.
  • Walking as required to perform responsibilities and assist with students
  • Sitting as required to perform responsibilities and monitor students
  • Standing as required to perform responsibilities and assist with students
  • Use of hands and arms for lifting/positioning students and manipulating adaptive equipment as required for student disabilities
  • Bending/stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, crawling as necessary to care for students
  • Able to lift 50 lbs in an emergency
  • Ability to react quickly with no advance warning to secure student safety and/or to assist with emergency medical situations
  • Talking and hearing as to communicate concerning job-related duties as assigned
  • Smell
  • Close vision, i.e., able to read medication labels correctly, with or without correction
  • Distance vision, i.e., able to recognize faces at 20 feet, with or without correction
  • Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
  • Peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Simple and firm grasping, left and right hands
  • Fine manipulating, left and right hands

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes standards of care and first aid training in caring for students and staff including but not limited to: a.collecting data in compliance with health services standards and supervising nurse instructions b.administering, documenting and inventorying medications in compliance with health services standards c.communicating appropriately with supervising nurse d.compiling data as directed e.providing care within the scope of practice and limitations of position f.utilizing appropriate problem solving and accurately performing approved job skills
  • Prioritizes and organizes completion of job responsibilities, including but not limited to: a.responding in a timely manner to students, parents and staff b.performing required duties in a timely manner consistent with standards and deadlines
  • Maintains accurate records including but not limited to: a.accurately documenting all services provided to students and staff b.accurately utilizing appropriate computer and paper documentation systems c.utilizing appropriate language, terminology and abbreviations d.tracking and documenting immunizations
  • Supports health services goals through continuous quality improvement and educational activities including but not limited to: a.attending health services meetings as directed b.contributing ideas and information as requested c.participating in activities and/or projects as requested d.complying with all health services standards
  • Participates appropriately in district safety activities including but not limited to: a.collecting, organizing and maintaining student and staff emergency information b.remaining knowledgeable regarding evacuation procedures c.maintaining a safe and organized work environment d.consulting with supervising nurse regarding any potentially hazardous situation
  • Maintains confidentiality of students and staff.
