ABOUT OUR DISTRICT The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color. LOCATION: Lincoln Middle School DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is semi‑technical and clerical health care work which involves providing minor emergency First Aid and CPR and CPR services and assisting a physician or school nurse in a school building. Under direct supervision, an employee in this class provides emergency First Aid and CPR services to pupils and employees and assists a physician or nurse in pre‑physical examinations. Examination results are recorded accurately and completely for a central file system. Responsibilities also include all the clerical record preparation and maintenance associated with the processing of each pupil's and/or employee's health history. The work involves considerable contact with many children. Work is reviewed by a superior through observation and checks of compiled records. Does related work as required.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of First Aid and CPR techniques.
  • Good knowledge of record keeping and filing.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to manage and establish rapport with school age children and/or employees.
  • Completion of an American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR Course within six (6) months of appointment, or Possession of a New York State Practical Nurse's license at time of appointment.
  • All candidates must be reachable on the current Onondaga County Civil Service eligibility list for this title OR be currently working in this title to be considered.
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $102.50 to the candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Administers minor First Aid and CPR services to pupils and school employees as necessary.
  • Assists in conducting height, weight and eye examinations.
  • Assists in preparing for routine physical examinations and tuberculosis tests.
  • Records and maintains current and accurate medical records on pupils and/or employees.
  • Orders and maintains health education materials and maintains related bulletin boards.
