About The Position

Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program. To provide full school counseling program for K-12 setting at GMS, including group counseling, individual counseling, educational placement in school and after graduation, group guidance/referral as needed, participation in IEP’s and team meetings as needed, and coordination with parents and community agencies, and to help the students develop to their fullest potential. In addition, this position is to lead and coordinate summer program planning. The School Guidance Counselor is primarily responsible to the Principal of Governor Morehead School for the Blind for providing full school counseling program for K-12 setting at GMS, including group counseling, individual counseling, educational placement in school and after graduation, testing program, group guidance/referral as needed, participation in IEP’s and team meetings as needed, and coordination with parents and community agencies, and to help the students develop to their fullest potential. In addition, this position is to serve the school’s testing coordinator focused on assessing student who are blind and visually impaired through best practices and state mandates. This is a 12-month position.

Responsibilities

  • Individual and Group Counseling Support school mental health professionals in students SEL growth and development through group and individual counseling and unique and targeted programing.
  • Oversee and fulfill a guidance program designed to allow students to voice concerns without fear of punishment or judgment.
  • In coordination with school psychologist and school administrators, teach small and large groups by actively engaging students to identify needs and support the learning process
  • Conduct and facilitate restorative social/emotional activities and support school-wide implementation of these practices.
  • Facilitate changes and modifications to student schedules to meet academic, ECC, and post-secondary goals and new enrollments.
  • Lead Individual and Group Counseling Counsel Students in Post-Secondary Options and Coordinate Transition Plans
  • In coordination with case managers, develop and manage transition goals and oversee the implementation of transition plans to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
  • Coordinate transition services that align with transition plans and postsecondary goals.
  • Identify areas of program growth in the area of supporting postsecondary transitions and plan/ facilitate professional development opportunities for all staff.
  • Coordinate with parents, families, and community agencies to align needs and services offered to students through state and local resources.
  • Support students in the process of application, registration, and fiscal responsibilities of post-secondary placements.
  • Help students develop a plan for their academic career that corresponds with their skills and interests.
  • Responsible for Student Coordinated Placement and Implementation of Academic Programs and IEPs.
  • Provide support to GMS staff for assorted tasks related to student programing and transportation.
  • Participate in planning committees and professional learning team.
  • Coordinator and assist with the administration of standardized testing.
  • Other duties as assigned by the School Principal.
