About The Position

This position directs actions of children and traffic at street intersections and school entrances to ensure safe crossings and monitors and enforces school zone speed limits. It is a non-supervisory classification that receives limited supervision, consulting with the Field Supervisor on unusual situations. Candidates must be able to think and react independently to various situations. The work hours consist of three hours per school day, specifically during early morning and afternoon, with specific hours determined when assigned to a school. The incumbent works 10 months out of the year and may occasionally be required to work special assignments.

Requirements

• Must be of good moral character and reputation
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds
• Must pass a pre-employment physical exam
• All employees must pass an extensive background check

Responsibilities

• Patrols street crossings and school entrances during hours when children are going to and coming from school
• Directs the actions of children and traffic
• Escorts children across the street
• Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding the school zone speed limit
• Places and removes caution signs and cones
• Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by use of whistle and/or hand signals
