Role Overview As a School Crossing Guard, you will serve as a safety advocate for students crossing roadways before and after school. You’ll work under the Covington Police Department’s direction to manage traffic flow, ensure pedestrian safety, and foster a safe environment for children traveling to and from Covington Independent Schools. This is a vital, public-facing role suited for individuals who are highly dependable, safety-conscious, and capable of working in various weather conditions. You will be stationed at designated school crossings and serve as a trusted figure in your assigned neighborhood.

Requirements

  • General understanding of traffic safety and pedestrian laws.
  • Familiarity with school zone regulations and procedures.
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to detail.
  • Clear communication and ability to give directions confidently.
  • Reliable time management and punctuality.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and move quickly in emergencies.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused during high-traffic situations.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must be dependable and able to report to assigned location on time, every day school is in session.
  • Physically capable of performing outdoor duties in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a safety or public service role.
  • Familiarity with the Covington community and school system.

Responsibilities

  • Safely escort school children and other pedestrians across streets at assigned crossing locations.
  • Monitor and manage vehicle traffic to allow safe pedestrian passage; use appropriate hand signals and signage.
  • Remain alert at all times while on duty; maintain a visible presence to ensure drivers comply with school zone regulations.
  • Perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.
  • Maintain courteous and respectful interactions with students, parents, and the general public.
  • Participate in safety training provided by the City; properly use all City-issued safety equipment (vests, signage, etc.).

Benefits

  • Normal Pay During School Breaks: Includes Holidays, Christmas Break, and Spring Break.
  • Longevity Pay: $15/month after completing 2 school years $30/month after 3 school years $40/month after 6 school years
  • Transportation: Free T.A.N.K. bus transportation to and from work site, as current routes permit.
  • Training & Equipment: Provided by the City of Covington.
