School Crossing Guard
About The Position
Vacancies are in the Traffic Division of the Operations Bureau of the Police Department. This is routing safety work in safeguarding school children against street crossing hazards. The work involves responsibility for the safety of school children at an assigned street crossing for a designated number of hours each day the schools are in session. Looks after the safety of children through constant attentiveness and by ensuring that children cross safely at the proper location(s); directs traffic at intersections; maintains discipline among school children when approaching the street intersection; writes reports on accidents, traffic violations and safety hazards. While much of the work is of a routing nature, incumbents must be able to exercise sound and independent judgment in emergencies where danger to life or safety of school children is involved. Performs related work as required.
Requirements
- Completion of the eighth school grade
- Experience in dealing with children
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Required to walk and stand for the entire shift
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to various weather conditions and the noise of heavy traffic on a regular basis
- Required to hold a hand-held stop sign in one hand, and a safety light in the other hand for extended periods of time when appropriate
- Ability to read and write English is preferred
- Ability to get along with the public
- Ability to control groups of children
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to direct light traffic effectively
