About The Position

The School Computer Technology Specialist - L1 is responsible for installing software, troubleshooting issues with servers, MAC and PC computers, and managing computer peripherals in a school environment. This role requires effective communication with school staff, students, families, and vendors to ensure the smooth operation of technology within the school. The specialist will also maintain school-based information systems and ensure compliance with accessibility guidelines.

Requirements

  • A four‐year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization.
  • One year of satisfactory full‐time experience in computer maintenance or repair, mainframe, server and/or mini computer operations, software or technical support.
  • Education above the high school level may be substituted for experience at a rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 6 semester credits in mainframe, server and/or minicomputer operations or a computer related field of study.
  • Graduation from an approved technical school with at least 450 hours in a specialization in mainframe, server or minicomputer operations or a certified technical training program in computer maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to three months of the experience.

  • Able to communicate technical information to users in a non-technical manner.
  • Experience and knowledge of NYCDOE applications such as ATS, CAASS, Parentlink, STARS, Office 365, JupiterEd, and DOE Workspace.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft, Linux, Android, ChromeOS, IOS, and Apple Operating Systems.
  • Experience in remote management of Microsoft Windows OS, Apple OS, iPads, and Chromebooks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel, Access, Excel) especially commonly used formulas such as vlookup.
  • Experience in creating, troubleshooting, and deploying images.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Server services such as Active Directory.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, organizes, and troubleshoots all computers and related technology on school campus including administrative offices, classrooms, computer labs, and laptop carts.
  • Maintains, organizes, and troubleshoots school-based information systems and numerous software applications such as the school's official website, Google Workspace domain, JupiterEd, CAASS and related NYCPS student databases and systems.
  • Centrally configures and updates PCs using Microsoft Group Policy, PDQ and other deployment software.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex network and internet connectivity related issues.
  • Monitors and tracks various tasks to ensure timely completion using a ticketing system and various project management tools such as Spiceworks, Zendesk, MS Teams, and other related applications.
  • Ensures the school website remains ADA-compliant according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Works with DIIT as one of the Tech SPOC (Single Points of Contact) to collaborate on projects that improve technology use in the school.
  • Stays up-to-date with the latest DIIT initiatives and standardized projects while researching the best methods to implement it within the school's infrastructure.
  • Researches, develops, and implements plans to improve technical projects beyond established budgets and results for classrooms, computer labs, administrative offices, etc.
  • Initiates tickets to the DOE Helpdesk for hardware problems and assists support personnel with resolution of problems at the school level.
  • Manages user accounts in Active Directory, Google Workspace, JupiterEd, and other school-based systems.
