About The Position

To support the District's instructional program by coordinating and supervising guidance and social/emotional learning activities that are designed to assist students in their personal, social, and intellectual development consistent with the goals set forth by the Board of Education and within the resources provided by it. Acts as the district's HIB coordinator by providing information regarding the provisions and procedures of the "Anti-bullying Bill of Rights". Provide staff with intervention and referral agencies for treatment services for affected students. Develop coordination between the community's mental health and treatment services with educational programs and pupil personnel services for students. Coordinate and educate in the areas of mental health, child abuse, substance abuse, harassment, intimidation, and bullying.

Requirements

Possess New Jersey Administrator Certificate for Supervisor
Possess New Jersey Educational Services Certificate for School Counselor (2702).
Master's Degree in an appropriate field.
Minimum of seven years of successful experience in school student personnel work.
Effective problem-solving, human relations, and communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
Must have experience overseeing/administering the New Jersey State Assessments programs.
Demonstrated ability to display the highest ethical standards and show respect for students, parents, and staff under stressful conditions to resolve conflict calmly.
Pass mandatory pre-employment physical, including drug screening in accordance with N.J.S.A.18A: 16-2(b)
Pass mandatory criminal history screening in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
Consistent attendance as defined by the New Jersey Department of Education.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google, and general computer skills.
Possess a valid driver's license and the ability to drive to various early childhood education sites.

Responsibilities

Coordination of Guidance Activities: Designs, implements, and evaluates the District-wide guidance and counseling program.
Coordinates the District guidance program with others in the school and community to promote maximum mental health and learning benefits for students.
Coordinates the Early College Program, dual credit, School Based Youth Services, and Academy Services.
Maintains communication with offices and agencies that provide specialized help to students and parents.
Works closely with the school principals and administrative personnel in the design and implementation of the schedule that provides continuity for students in Grades P-5 and 7-12.
Provides for the articulation of the guidance program by conducting regular meetings of counselors.
Coordinates with the guidance team to provide information to students about post-high school opportunities through college fairs, individual appointments, print documents, and audio-visual materials and arranges for/attends such events.
Identifies and addresses the needs of special populations through special guidance programs and other activities in consultation with the Special Services Director and content-area supervisors.
Oversees the application process (for post-high school education, armed services, scholarships, etc.) and ensures the timely submission of high-quality documents.
Ensures that appropriate records are maintained by counselors to track student progress.
Communicates with principals and counselors for transition between Grades K, 5, and 8.
Ensures alignment of courses with the Clearinghouse.
Supervises the preparation and processing of early college programs, college, scholarships, and employment applications.
Reviews and evaluates program effectiveness.
Surveys students for interest in new course offerings and review enrollment projections for existing courses to ensure sufficient interest/enrollment for each course.
Reviews course descriptions and SCHED codes, and coordinates with the Human Resources Office to determine required certifications for course instructors.
Remains current on changes to New Jersey learning standards and assessments and graduation requirements.
Provides course enrollment information to administration for scheduling purposes.
Personnel Administration: Supervises and evaluates the performance of the district guidance counseling team.
Participates in the process to recruit, screen, interview, and recommending new counselors for the district.
Provides feedback to and solicits feedback from principals regarding the performance of guidance staff, counselors, and office personnel in accordance with state law, Board policy, and contractual agreements.
Develops and conducts in-service training for district staff as the School Climate Coordinator.
Works with state and county agencies in substance awareness prevention curriculum and the identification of possible abused students.
School Climate: Reviews and reports data collected on harassment, intimidation, and bullying pursuant to section 1 of P.L. 1982 c. 163 (C. 18A:17-46) to identify and report to the Department of Education.
Assists in the development, review, and revisions of policies and procedures for the Substance Awareness Program and HIB program and ensure that building level teams remain current on program requirements and changes in the law.
Coordinates and strengthens anti-bullying initiatives and policies of the District to prevent, identify and address harassment, intimidation, or bullying of students.
Working collaboratively with the Safety and Security Coordinator, principals, directors, and special education department to develop a training program on the impact of harassment, intimidation, and bullying on students and schools, that will be available for the school districts to use.
Collaborates with each school's anti-bullying specialist, the Board of Education, and the Superintendent of Schools to prevent, identify and respond to harassment, intimidation, or bullying of students in the district.
Meets monthly with each school's anti-bullying, specialist and the School Safety Team to strengthen procedures and policies to prevent, identify, and address harassment, intimidation, or bullying in the District.
Coordinates student awareness activities, such as Peer Education (training of middle and high students), RED Ribbon Week, Anti-Bullying Week, assembly programs, etc.
Develops a substance awareness prevention curriculum.
Coordinates with agencies the intervention and referral for treatment services of possible abused students.
Coordinates community mental health and treatment services with educational programs and pupil personnel services for students.
Establishes and maintains participation in County agencies dealing with mental health and counseling services for students.
Provides data to the Superintendent of Schools, to the New Jersey Department of Education regarding harassment, intimidation, or bullying of students.
Execute such other duties related to school substance awareness, harassment, intimidation, or bullying as requested by the Superintendent of Schools.
Review and evaluate the effectiveness of the District's anti-bullying program.
District Assessment: Oversees the District testing program, prepares information/data as requested, and interprets the results of tests for school personnel, the Board of Education, parents, and other audiences.
Coordinates the assessment process for students who do not pass the mandated State assessment.
Works in cooperation with other administrators and counselors in the District to coordinate the District's testing/assessment program.
School and Community Relations: Promotes on-going, two-way communications with students, school personnel, parents and others to enhance the guidance services program and the school district.
Prepares and disseminates guidance-related literature and publications (i.e., School Profile).
Participates in administrative meetings for administrators and supervisors as required.
Facilitates articulation for district guidance with other agencies.
Attends county and state student assistance team meetings, and provides recommendations for interventions and follow-up.
Provides the staff and community with referral information for HIB, Substance Awareness, and refer students to outside agencies.
Professional Development: Ensures that counselors engage in appropriate professional growth and development to remain current in their field.
Keeps current with changes and developments in the profession by attending professional workshops and meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and similar activities relevant to the job duties and turnkeys new information with appropriate staff.
Represents the district at relevant local, county, and state guidance meetings.
Additional Responsibilities: Performs such other tasks and assumes such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, or designated administrator.
Capable of driving to all schools to perform the required District-wide guidance counselor, student assistance counselor, and anti-bullying coordinator duties and responsibilities.
