About The Position

DESCRIPTION: The primary duty of a bus driver is to operate school buses under all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to: fog, ran, hail, sleet, snow and ice. Transport students and other authorized persons over regular "to and from school" routes five days per week and on field, extracurricular and special extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials. School Bus Drivers are subject to mandatory random drug testing by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Department of Labor and Industries (DOL), along with a pre-employment drug test.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum age: 21
  • Possess a valid state driver's license with a C.D.L, Class B with a passenger endorsement and S endorsement. Training will be provided, if needed, to obtain the proper licenses and endorsements.
  • Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described herein
  • Possess a current and valid Medical Examination Report
  • Possess and maintain an acceptable driving record
  • Continue to meet all State and Federal regulations regarding School Bus Drivers and CDL
  • Sufficient command of the English language to communicate with students, parents, district staff and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities
  • Must possess sufficient physical strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school vehicle
  • Must possess sufficient strength and agility to move about in a vehicle as required to provide students assistance during evacuations
  • Hearing capabilities must be sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring from any direction outside of the bus, such as horns, whistles, sirens, trains and bells, from a distance which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid a hazardous situation
  • Vision must be 20/40 in best eye, with or without correction; approximately 140 degrees peripheral, which as a single-criteria shall not be excluding; and depth perception adequate to reasonably determine from a stationary or moving vehicle; eye coordination to avoid diplopia; color vision must be adequate to distinguish the colors of traffic lights

Responsibilities

  • Drive a school bus or other approved district vehicle to scheduled routes, five days per week and/or on all types of trips in support of district approved activities, both within and outside the district boundaries
  • Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus/vehicle and related equipment
  • Be knowledgeable of the installation of fuel, oil and coolant, tire inflation and safety equipment, fire extinguishers, road flares or markers, sanders, tire chains and first aid kits
  • Clean school bus/vehicle including interior and exterior sweeping and washing; mopping of floors as needed
  • The driver shall assure the windshield and rear window of the vehicle are cleaned upon returning from an activity trip as well as clearing all litter from the interior prior to leaving on another trip
  • Operate a two-way radio as needed, both within and outside of the district boundaries
  • Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety
  • Report unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver
  • The driver will abstain from the use of tobacco, drugs and intoxicating liquors while in charge of the school bus of district vehicle
  • The driver will not be under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs in any degree while in charge of the school bus or district vehicle
  • The driver will not permit any other person to use intoxicating liquors, drugs or tobacco in any form in or about the school bus or district vehicle while the driver is in charge of the school bus or district vehicle
  • The driver will promptly report all vehicle repairs or issues of any kind to the proper authorities
  • The driver will operate the school bus or district vehicle in accordance with Washington State laws and policies implemented by the Superintendent of Public Instruction
  • Perform basic first aid as appropriate or needed which may include CPR
  • Legibly and accurately complete forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route maps, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and any other clerical type forms or documents necessary
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors and/or superintendent
