Henrico County Public Schools is seeking substitute bus drivers for the 2024-2025 school year. The primary responsibility of the substitute bus driver is to safely transport students from their homes or designated bus stops to school and back, as well as to transport students for field trips and other school-related activities. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of students during their commutes. Substitute bus drivers will fill in for full-time drivers on an as-needed basis and may have the opportunity to transition into full-time positions based on performance and availability. The position requires conducting proper pre-trip inspections of the school bus to ensure it is safe for operation. Drivers must operate the bus in a safe manner, enforce safety rules, and apply reasonable disciplinary actions with fairness and consistency. Building a good rapport with the schools serviced and the Pupil Transportation Department is essential. Additionally, drivers are expected to maintain good personal hygiene and conduct, attend work regularly, and engage actively in their responsibilities. The role also requires the ability to lift 25 lbs. or more and perform other duties as assigned. To qualify for this position, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License with the necessary endorsements and successfully complete the State of Virginia Department of Education Certification Course to drive a school bus. Knowledge of the operation and function of a school bus, as well as the governing laws, is essential. Candidates should possess the ability to read and complete forms required by the Pupil Transportation office and effectively interact with both children and adults. A good driving record, good health, and a drug-free status are mandatory, and candidates must be at least 21 years old.
