About The Position

The School Bus Driver/Custodian position is responsible for ensuring the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips. This role also includes maintaining and cleaning school buildings or areas as assigned by the Director of Facilities. The position requires adherence to safety protocols and effective communication with students and staff.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs, and related information.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus and conduct pre-trip inspections.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and in emergencies.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedules set by supervisors.
  • Ability to carry boxes and move furniture over 50 pounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Safely drives a school bus on designated routes during school days.
  • Transports students, teachers, and others on school field or activity trips.
  • Inspects assigned bus daily to ensure it is in good, clean, and safe working order.
  • Cleans and refuels the bus as needed.
  • Ensures communication devices are functional before each trip.
  • Reports mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents promptly.
  • Arranges for routine maintenance of the bus and transports it to maintenance facilities.
  • Maintains order and discipline among students during transport according to district policies.
  • Tracks route timing and submits records and reports as required.
  • Ensures no child is left alone on the bus and that all children have departed at the end of routes.
  • Inventories bus emergency and first aid supplies and reports needs to the Director.
  • Prepares aides and children for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held as required.
  • Evacuates children in case of accidents/emergencies according to procedures and completes written reports.
  • Checks and secures the building at the beginning and end of shifts to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Cleans various areas of the building according to school district standards.
  • Sweeps, mops, buffs, strips, and waxes floors.
  • Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
  • Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
  • Removes graffiti and cleans glass areas.
  • Replaces light bulbs and sets up/breaks down chairs, tables, and equipment in meeting rooms.
  • Clears snow from entrances and walks, and spreads sand and ice melting chemicals.
  • Performs grounds-keeping duties and maintains grounds.
  • Receives deliveries and assists in unloading trucks and storing supplies.
  • Delivers supplies and materials to various areas of the building.
  • Empties wastebaskets and assists in recycling programs.
  • Attends and participates in trainings and professional development opportunities.
