The core differences between PCA and RBT is that an RBT is involved in specialized training in Applied Behavior Analysis, with passing a certification exam, to deliver services to students with higher intensity behavioral or instructional needs. A PCA is a level 2 paraprofessional generally providing one-on-one support to help a student navigate their school day. Support: Assists with daily activities, behavioral support, academic engagement, general classroom participation, collecting data, and provide daily progress notes. An RBT is a paraprofessional who has undergone specific training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Support: Higher level behavior intervention with student(s) who have significant behavioral needs. Assists with daily activities, academic engagement, general classroom participation, and provide daily progress notes. Data & Analysis: Responsible for extensive data collection, graphing, and analysis to track student progress. Verbal Programming: Implements complex verbal behavior programs for students with communication challenges. Supervision: Unlike a PCA, an RBT must maintain their certification through the BACB and work directly under a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
