About The Position

The position serves as a liaison between doctor’s offices, the hospital, and patients, ensuring effective communication and coordination of care. The scheduler is responsible for scheduling appointments for various hospital departments and physician office visits, following specific protocols for scheduling and financial information collection. The role requires manual dexterity and the ability to concentrate on detail amidst other activities. The scheduler must ensure that all patients have the necessary information to arrive on time and prepared for their procedures, while also ensuring the hospital has all required information for proper billing. Additionally, the scheduler receives requests for patient scheduling from referrals, maintains communication with other departments regarding scheduling changes, verifies and obtains prior authorizations when needed, and coordinates transportation needs for patient appointments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
  • 2 or more years of experience in hospital registration/patient access desired.
  • 2 or more years of hospital setting experience in scheduling required.
  • Typing speed of at least 45 WPM and basic experience with mainframe computers, calculators, copiers, FAX machines, and multi-line phone systems required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is necessary.
  • Must be thorough and able to follow detailed instructions.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required.
  • Ability to work with speed and accuracy while multi-tasking is required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a liaison between doctor’s offices, the hospital, and patients.
  • Schedules appointments for various hospital departments and physician office visits.
  • Receives routine functional guidance from the supervisor/manager of Patient Access concerning resources for patient referrals.
  • Follows specific protocols in scheduling and collection of financial information.
  • Assures that all patients have the necessary information to arrive on time and prepared for their procedures.
  • Receives requests to schedule patients from referrals and schedules patients accordingly.
  • Maintains open communication with other departments regarding scheduling changes.
  • Properly verifies and obtains prior authorization when needed.
  • Follows up on any requests and/or messages left on work phone immediately.
  • Coordinates transportation needs for patients' appointments.
