Job Description The Mater Carpenter reports directly to the TIP Shop Foreman and help provides supervision, mentorship, and training to scene shop crew. Their schedule is Sunday – Thursday 7am – 3:45 with 2 – 15min breaks and a 45min lunch. There may be “on call” repairs that may need to be covered but those hours would be negotiated. Assist supervising carpenters and crew in the proper execution of design elements based on technical drawings and production requirements. Maintain organization of the shop, storage, stage and backstage areas. Responsible for leading the construction, assembly, and finishing of scenic elements for productions, ensuring all builds meet the required quality standards, safety standards and deadlines. Also providing training when needed for equipment / tools or construction techniques. Assist the Shop Foreman by enforcing safety protocols and ensure a safe working environment for all shop personnel. Make sure all equipment is maintained and operated according to safety regulations. Maintain accurate inventory of materials, tools, and equipment. Coordinate with the Shop Foreman any concerns or shortages of necessary resources. Work closely with the Shop Foreman and Technical Director to ensure scenic designs are executed accurately. Provide input on the feasibility of designs and suggest cost-effective or practical alternatives when needed. Inspect finished scenic elements to ensure they meet the required aesthetic, functional, and safety standards. Provide guidance and training to seasonal staff, helping them develop their skills and understanding of the craft.

Requirements

  • Assist the Shop Foreman to ensure the rules, regulations, and protocols of JCPRD and Theatre in the park are followed during the build of shows.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a scenic shop building and developing proficiency in theatrical construction techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of shop tools and equipment. Including but not limited to Miter /circular / table saws, angle grinders, drills, impact drivers, hammer drills, air compressors and pneumatic tools.
  • 2 years’ experience supervising scenic crews and scheduling to meet production deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and quality control.
  • Supervision and instruction while building alongside the scenic carpenters and crew assuring production deadlines are being met.
  • Experience training in the safe operation of shop tools and equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot construction issues and execute solutions in real time
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs – 75lbs and work standing, kneeling, or bending for extended periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Read scenic design elevations and create cut lists.
  • Experience with rigging principles.
  • Familiarity with Mig welding.
  • Experience with scissor lifts or personnel lifts.
