The Scaler performs marine surface preparation, cleaning, and related support work on vessels, barges, floating drydocks, and associated marine equipment. Work is performed in accordance with the jurisdiction and scope of Ship Scalers and Painters Union, Local No. 56, and may include shipboard maintenance, marine spill response, and other marine and industrial services. All work is conducted in compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and contractual requirements.

Requirements

  • Membership in or eligibility for dispatch through Ship Scalers and Painters Union, Local No. 56 (ILWU).
  • Ability to safely perform marine and industrial labor as defined by the CBA, between Local 56 and the Employer.
  • Willingness to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Ability to comply with drug and alcohol testing, safety training, and site‑specific requirements.
  • Adherence to OSHA, Coast Guard, port authority, and company safety standards is required at all times.
  • Participation in required training, certifications, and safety meetings is mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scaling, cleaning, washing, and surface preparation on ships, boats, barges, and floating drydocks.
  • Conduct tank cleaning, flushing, steaming of ship lines, and butterworth washing operations.
  • Operate water blasting and pressure washing equipment used in marine cleaning and assist with painting, caulking, sealing, and coating preparation as assigned within union jurisdiction.
  • Set up and connect hoses, pumps, lights, and related equipment required for marine work.
  • Perform work related to marine oil spill response and cleanup, including handling oil‑impacted materials and equipment.
  • Participate in general marine labor tasks inherent to vessel cleaning, maintenance, and spill control operations.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements, confined space protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working conditions and report hazards or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Work is performed onboard vessels, docks, terminals, shipyards, and marine facilities.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and wet or slippery conditions.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials commonly used in marine operations.
