About The Position

Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health. The SCADA Instrumentation & Controls Technician position assists and leads installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the instrumentation and control, electronic, security, motor control, and telemetry systems used to operate and monitor the Aurora Water System. Through career progression advancement opportunities, senior level technicians independently perform the above tasks as well as maintain, install and fabricate the instrumentation and control, SCADA system and motor control equipment.

Requirements

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: Three ( 3 ) years minimum of professional experience in an instrumentation technician role, with experience including calibration, repair and troubleshooting of electronic process control equipment, motor control centers , knowledge of PLC programming , VFD’s, soft starts troubleshooting and commissioning and working Scada systems .
  • Knowledge: P rinciples of process control, electronics, electrical equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and related computers, customer service, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) Knowledge of VFD’s and Soft starts Knowledge of current NEC and NFPA electrical standard s and procedures Knowledge of the programming of PLC’s and OIT’s. P rinciples of Troubleshooting security access control
  • Skills: S kills of troubleshooting, calibrating, and repairing process controls . S kills of VFD and soft start motor controlling device troubleshooting and commissioning. S kills of electrical and mechanical troubleshooting. (480 Volt AC, 120 Volt ac, 24 Volt ac/dc, 12 Volt Ac/dc) S killed with Microsoft Office applications and CMMS's are desirable .
  • Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and citizens Ability to read P&ID and electrical drawings, schematics, and blueprints Communicate effectively both orally and in writing technical information and instructions Work quickly and safely under pressure of emergency situations Ability to work overtime when needed Ability to work standby on a rotating basis and/or callback duty Standby duty requires a 45-minute response time to the candidate's normal place of work
  • Licenses and Certifications Required: Colorado Driver's License with a good driving history
  • Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City , all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
  • Physical Demands: Occasional Medium physical work requiring the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance Continuous walking and standing for inspections and testing Frequent pushing, pulling, bending, crouching/stooping C limbing of ladders to test and inspect electrical systems Hand/eye coordination to operate a computer, testing and calibration equipment Hand/foot coordination for operation of a vehicle to travel to remote sites Normal color vision, to determine wire colors and to read manuals, test instruments, and other written material Hearing and listening to troubleshoot electronic equipment and communicate on telephone and radio
  • Work Environment: Works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions Hot and Cold with exposure to noise, dust, and fumes Work around and with chemicals standard to the water industry Exposure to high/low voltage electrical equipment Works in tight confined spaces and at high heights
  • Equipment Used: Operates motor vehicle; calibration and electronic testing equipment; and computers
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment ( e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer Associate ’s degree in electronics or related field.
  • ISA CCST Level I - III Certification preferred
  • S killed with Microsoft Office applications and CMMS's are desirable .

Responsibilities

  • Installs, calibrates, maintains , troubleshoots and repairs electronic/electro-mechanical equipment to ensure proper operation
  • Maintains, troubleshoots with moderate programming of computerized process control equipment such as PLC's, RTU's and SCADA system devices
  • Troubleshoots control system and electrical power system failures in plants, lifts and pump stations
  • Ability to follow LO/TO
  • Troubleshoots maintains VFD’s and soft starts including programming and tuning
  • Maintains awareness of new technology
  • Works under the supervision of senior personnel
  • Troubleshoot s security access control
  • Adjusts, calibrates and repairs electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment to ensure proper operation
  • Prepares documentation to produce traceable information paths including instrument calibration, system engineering, and CAD drawings
  • Instructs operations personnel in the proper use of electronic process controllers
  • Identify and recommend controls to shore up cybersecurity gaps and track from implementation and validation.
  • May perform lead work duties on projects on occasions
  • Assist with programming of new installations and upgrades at sites
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
