About The Position

The SBHC Nurse Practitioner is the sole medical provider at the SBHC site. He/she may be the primary care provider or he/she may work in conjunction with the primary care provider at LCHC . The SBHC NP is responsible for the health care, treatment and education of patients within the scope of the NP’s knowledge and skill and always under the supervision of a physician The NP will collaborate with other SBHC staff as well as school staff including school nurse, school SW and school adjustment counselors to ensure that all medical and BH needs are met so that students are successful in school. The NP may also collaborate with outside agencies such as after school program and summer camps as well as participate in health education programs , health screenings or health fairs. Participates in LCH community outreach efforts, as appropriate and as assigned. This may include serving as a health consultant for the Lynn Public Schools, local day care centers, after school program, day camps or other community organizations, providing such services as programmatic consultation, preparation/review of health-related policies and documentation, and other health care related consultation, or participating in health screenings, health education programs or counseling at health fairs and other similar community events. The NP will also provide outreach to families and school staff via open houses, faculty meetings and other school functions as requested. Additional outreach to families for specific issues ie immunizations will be done via letters/permission slips sent home.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the expanded role in Massachusetts, (see M.G.L.’ Chapter 112- the Nurse Practitioner Act for a description of an expanded role).
  • Possess a minimum of a baccalaureate in nursing from an accredited program
  • Possess and maintain certification.
  • Have a minimum of three years' experience in school nursing or a related field.
  • Maintain certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first-aid from a recognized provider, i.e. American Heart Association.
  • Have an identified physician who provides consultation.
  • Assumes responsibility for updating knowledge and skill in community health, management, and related fields as new information emerges.
  • Complete ongoing continuing education programs pertinent to the evolving specialty area of school health and school nursing practice, as well as meet continuing education requirements for licensure in the expanded role in Massachusetts
  • History of good attendance and positive work attitude

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree in nursing is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conducts history and physical exams and renders well care.
  • Conducts appropriate sick care and renders diagnosis and treatment as indicated.
  • Refers seriously ill patients to the physician or hospital as deemed necessary.
  • Performs emergency treatment in case of serious illness or injury.
  • Provides appropriate health teaching to patients and their families.
  • Maintains appropriate contact with community resources.
  • Participates in regular medical conferences as scheduled.
  • Consultation and collaboration with a Medical Director/Physician in Pediatric/Adolescent medicine or other related field in addressing medical issues presented by the students and in developing practice guideline
  • Responds to frequently encountered health issues, provides counseling and crisis intervention when required, e.g., adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, death of a family member, suicide, responds to child neglect or abuse issues (as required by Massachusetts statute).
  • Provides primary care to students.
