The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. SAP writer primary responsibilities include the development of Skill Acquisition Programs (SAPs). Finalized SAPs and distribute following ISP. Train residential support staff, vocational services and recreational services. SAP writers work involves ensuring team recommendations support the need for specific, individualized training programs based on each individuals' assessments, assist IDT develop new SAPs, revise SAPs as needed based on IDT recommendations to ensure that they remain appropriate over time. This position at times utilizes a flexible schedule for staff training and individual observations. Monitor implementation and take corrective actions as needed. This position will be hired and supervised by the Behavioral Health Director.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and skills in relevant therapeutic techniques (e.g., applied behavior analysis, sensory integration, etc).
  • Has knowledge about Skill Acquisition Plan development process or skill development.
  • Ability to train staff in treatment methods and related areas.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to assist in development of treatment and support plans.
  • Ability to develop and maintain data collection systems for assigned therapeutic specialty (e.g., music therapy, therapeutic recreation, dance/movement therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, or vocational rehabilitation).
  • Ability to utilize personal computers and relevant software.
  • General knowledge, or ability to gain knowledge, of ICF/IID regulations and state supported living center policies and procedures.
  • Ability to meet the same physical requirements as those for direct contact staff positions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date, is required. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • At least six months of work experience with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or in performing therapeutic work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the areas of applied behavior analysis, sensory integration, music therapy, therapeutic recreation, dance/movement therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, and/ or vocational rehabilitation is preferred.
  • Experience in the development of treatment and support plans for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Development of Skill Acquisition Programs (SAPs)

  • Monitor implementation and take corrective actions as needed
  • Attend work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Work with multiple disciplines to clarify and verify information for accuracy, resolve discrepancies prior to writing SAPs.
  • Write assessment based Skill Acquisition Plans.
  • Provide comprehensive training on Skill Acquisition Plans.
  • Establish and maintain positive, supportive relationships with individuals served, co-workers, and IDT members.
  • Continually enhance job performance by participation in career growth and development activities by participating in mandatory facility training for maintenance and competency development.
  • Attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with and abides by the rules of the agency and facility's policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Perform related work as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or continuity of operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
