About The Position

Join a team that keeps our community clean, safe, and running smoothly. In this leadership role, you'll supervise dedicated crews responsible for the collection of solid waste from residents and small businesses-ensuring reliable, high-quality service every day. You'll lead by example, supporting your team in the field and stepping in to operate equipment when needed. This position offers the opportunity to combine hands-on technical work with team leadership, all under the guidance of the Solid Waste Collection Assistant Superintendent. You'll directly oversee daily crew operations, contribute to problem-solving, and help shape a positive, productive work environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience with operating sanitation equipment.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License (Class B or A CDL).
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively to assist personnel and customers concerning problems relating to the job while finding reasonable solutions quickly in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must be able to direct activities of others working extended periods of time in all weather conditions to manage workload.
  • Must have good driving and safety records.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns and supervises the work of semi-skilled and/or skilled workers and equipment operators in the collection of refuse and solid waste material from residents and small businesses.
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions, policy, and established procedures.
  • Communicates with co-workers, subordinate personnel, and customers concerning problems relating to the job and finds solutions.
  • Supervises and participates in the performance of after-hours emergency activities and special events.
  • Uses multiple technology applications to aid in providing customer service (Cayenta) and accountability for subordinates (Routeware)
  • Makes and adjusts work assignments as needed.
  • Requisitions necessary equipment, tools, supplies and materials.
  • Maintains time and material records.
  • Prepares simple reports.
  • Provides instructions on use of safety equipment and enforces safe work policy.
  • Trains, instructs and evaluates subordinates.
  • Understands and assists in accomplishing goals and objectives established for the division.
  • Possess considerable knowledge of equipment related to and used by subordinates.
  • Performs equipment operation when required to assist with completion of daily assignments.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
