About The Position

A full-time position is available in our state-of-the-art environmental laboratory for a Sample Receiving Lab Technician to log in chemical samples, enter analytical results into a database, produce and distribute reports. Garratt-Callahan, (www.garrattcallahan.com [http://www.garrattcallahan.com]), is a National Industrial Water Treatment Chemical Company since 1904. Our headquarters, and our national laboratory, are located in Burlingame, California near the San Francisco Airport. Our lab has new equipment, skylights, an atrium, secure parking, competitive wage, morning and afternoon/evening shifts, and full benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and 401k. We are a privately owned, profitable company with a family atmosphere and with friendly people. Our 2025 were at record levels, and our 2026 sales are trending to be even better. The Garratt-Callahan Company Analytical Laboratory is a State of California certified laboratory that analyzes waters, deposits and corrosion coupons for the purpose of corrosion and scale control in industrial water systems. We also perform inorganic testing of drinking waters and wastewaters for regulatory purposes. The Salary is $55,000 to $65,000, depending on experience. Full time, with medical, dental, vision, and 401k benefits available.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma, and completion of high school or college level chemistry courses is required.
  • Above average English language skills, both written and verbal are necessary.
  • Must be computer literate and understand at a minimum word processing spreadsheet, database, E-mail and Internet software.
  • Proficiency with basic math skills is required.

Nice To Haves

  • A Chemistry related science degree is desirable.
  • Experience with laboratory LIMS is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves and opens shipping containers of samples and lab supplies. Restocks supplies and enters new chemicals into the chemical inventory. Recycles and disposes of shipping containers and packing materials.
  • Checks new samples for collection, preservation, sample size and holding time requirements and any issues. Contacts sample submitters (customers and sales employees) to inform and resolve sample issues. Splits, acidifies, and preserves samples as needed. Completes Sample Receipt Checklist.
  • Assigns unique lab project numbers and sample numbers to new samples, labels samples and chain of custody forms accordingly, and completes forms.
  • Distributes samples and forms to the appropriate analysts, lab stations and storage locations. Informs analysts of rush priority samples and special testing requirements.
  • Performs data entry of sample and test information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Coordinates on subcontracting analyses and sample pickup through outside labs as needed.
  • Performs data entry of analytical data into the LIMS and produces laboratory reports in hardcopy and electronic formats.
  • Orders, restocks and maintains sampling supplies, including sample containers, labels and shipping coolers.
  • Maintains, calibrates and/or monitors the walk-in sample cooler, IR thermometer, and other equipment used in sample receiving and storage.
  • Prepares sample preservation solutions and other reagents.
  • Maintains the organization and cleanliness of the sample log-in area, walk-in sample cooler and supply storage area. Assists the Quality Assurance Coordinator in the organization of file cabinets and record storage area.
  • Cross-trains on, fills in for and assists with the Corrosion Coupon Technician responsibilities, including sample disposal, filling coupon requests, cleaning and weighing coupons, photographing coupons, recording corrosion mechanisms, entering coupon data into the LIMS, producing coupon reports and recycling corrosion coupons.
  • May cross-train on and assist the chemists with tasks such as equipment calibration, reagent preparation, and wet chemistry analyses.
  • Follows lab SOPs, EPA methods and other referenced analytical methods, the Lab Quality Manual, EPA and State of California ELAP regulations and other lab QA/QC protocols or as directed by the Quality Assurance Coordinator. Interfaces with internal and external auditors as needed.
  • Completes all required lab documentation, such as logs and forms, and performs all quality checks required by SOPs and other protocols listed above. Informs the Quality Assurance Coordinator or Lab Director of failed quality control checks, out-of-compliance equipment, analytical quality concerns, and changes needed to laboratory documentation.
