About The Position

The Sample Maker plays a pivotal role in the product development process at GMP, collaborating closely with the design and development teams as well as the pattern maker to transform conceptual designs into functional prototypes. The ideal candidate demonstrates proficiency in producing samples efficiently and accurately, while also possessing the ability to identify potential manufacturing challenges, resolve complex assembly issues, and comprehend the intended use requirements of the final product. Throughout the prototyping phase, the Sample Maker’s input is essential, providing valuable feedback to the design team that contributes to the creation of products optimized for mass production and distinguished by superior quality.

Requirements

  • 5+ years cut and sew manufacturing experience and deep knowledge of production floor processes for backpack or related category
  • Proficiency with basic computer functions including MS Office
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with industry standard cut and sew equipment
  • Able to operate various types of sewing machines, including Single Needle Walking Foot, Double Needle CWF, Bartack, Rivet/Eyelet Presses
  • Experience interpreting digital patterns and assembling them into complicated assemblies
  • Knowledge and understanding of working with textiles, including determining yarn direction and bias, fabric coatings and treatments, etc.
  • Proficiency with tools of the trade, including scissors, measuring tools, etc.
  • Ability to work with limited instruction and supervision
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions on prototype assembly
  • Adaptable to new sewing methods and techniques

Responsibilities

  • Sew and assemble backpack samples from design sketches, CAD patterns, and specification packages.
  • Assist product team with assembly methods and other sewing problems.
  • Effectively communicate and troubleshoot with the patternmaker and product team
  • Completes projects in a timely manner.
  • Verifies pattern set for accuracy and integrity.
  • Evaluation and measurement of finished prototypes.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the sample lab tools and raw materials.
  • Administrative responsibilities including maintaining common areas, distributing mail, and shipping packages
