About The Position

The Sample Handler is responsible for the safe and efficient handling of test samples throughout their entire lifecycle—from receiving and verification to storage, distribution, and final dispatch. This role requires the operation of Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) or forklift equipment, along with strong coordination across internal teams to ensure timely test starts, accurate documentation, and compliance with UL quality and accreditation requirements. This position is onsite at the Fremont Laboratory.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to operate Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT); previous forklift certification preferred.
  • Experience with material handling equipment and safe operation of hand and small power tools (e.g., saws, drills).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Excel, with the ability to learn internal database systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and accuracy in sample documentation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills when interacting with internal teams.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 60 lbs and perform physical tasks including standing, walking, bending, reaching, and stooping.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in warehouse operations, logistics, or laboratory support roles.
  • Familiarity with inventory or sample management systems.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement practices (5S, Lean, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, label, and record incoming samples using database systems and basic Microsoft applications.
  • Operate Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) or forklifts to move, store, and organize materials safely.
  • Verify samples against project requirements and report discrepancies or issues to the Project Team.
  • Maintain accurate sample tracking throughout testing, including internal distribution, storage, and final disposition.
  • Ensure samples are properly prepared and available for testing according to internal customer timelines.
  • Communicate with internal customers via phone and email regarding sample returns, shipping instructions, and status updates.
  • Support laboratory, engineering, and shipping/receiving operations with general material and sample handling needs.
  • Assist in maintaining the warehouse area, ensuring organization, cleanliness, and adherence to safety standards.
  • Conduct periodic inventories of storage areas; report and help resolve missing, damaged, or misplaced samples.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support the development of process documentation, reports, and metrics as needed.
