About The Position

The Saltwater/Freshwater Aquarist I position at The Living Planet Aquarium is a full-time role that involves working in both the Freshwater and Saltwater departments. The Aquarist will be responsible for the care and maintenance of aquatic systems, ensuring the health and well-being of the animals, and assisting with various projects and activities. This entry-level position requires a strong commitment to animal care and adherence to aquarium protocols.

Requirements

  • A college degree (A.A, A.S, B.A, or B.S) in biology/zoology or related scientific coursework is preferred.
  • Up to one year of experience caring for animals in a public aquarium or zoological facility.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and obtain a Utah driver's license within six months of hire date.
  • Open water SCUBA certification from a recognized agency may be needed.
  • Ability to dive for collections, animal care, and routine maintenance of exhibits.

  • Experience with medication administration under supervision.
  • Strong identification skills for animals and plants under care.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Cover systems assigned for call outs and manage other systems for the day.
  • Assist with group projects and activities, such as shark feeds.
  • Provide high-quality care to the animals throughout the building under aquarium protocols.
  • Set up, maintain, and care for exhibits and holding systems.
  • Prepare and dispense diets for the animals.
  • Test and maintain water quality and keep records.
  • Stay updated on the natural history, environmental parameters, and husbandry requirements of the animals.
  • Act as a resource and mentor for volunteers and interns.
  • Train, develop, and oversee the work of volunteers or interns assigned to the Aquarist's area.
  • Complete inspection rounds at least twice daily, assessing inhabitant behavior and health.
  • Perform general husbandry functions without direct supervision.
  • Maintain live exhibits and holding systems at a high level of quality.
  • Ensure cleanliness of systems and work areas, including back of house space.
  • Report all non-functioning life support equipment to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain daily and other records in accordance with aquarium protocols.
  • Collaborate with coworkers and colleagues from other institutions in aquarium techniques.
  • Assist in maintaining supplies, inventories, and equipment for the area or department.
